Excursion tips in Ultental & surroundings
There is plenty to discover!
Ultental offers idyll and traditions amidst splendid nature with numerous excursion destinations:
- The old larch trees in Ulten are simply gigantic: 28 metres high, 8.20 metres in diameter. A once cut tree had 2160 annual rings, which indicates a really old age.
- Experience farmers' culture in the water-driven mills and in the Ulten Valley Museum with a traditional wooden room (Stube), "smoke" kitchen and numerous tools.
- Traudi Schweinbacher can tell you everything about herbs and their use in her kingdom of herbs Wegleit. She knows everything about herbs and also made up the ingredients for our Ulten treatments.
- The centenary "Lahner Saw" hosts the visitors' centre of the Stilfserjoch/Stelvio National Park. Up to the 70's of the past century the farmers of St. Gertraud/S. Gertrude used to bring their wood to this sawmill. The old saw has been restored and is now fully operational. The history and importance of wood for the valley is explained with computer technology through films, slide shows and fascinating simulations. The myth of the forest is presented in a separate room: it smells of spruce, wood and moss. Visitors hear birds singing, see cuckoos, woodpeckers and all the other inhabitants of the forest, and experience the change of the forest during the course of the seasons.
- The "Häusl am Stoan" (house at the stone) is a nature sight of the Ultental Valley and a true curiosity. In 1882 it was still located on the meadows at the right shore of Falschauer River. After the floods of a heavy storm dragged away meadows and houses, this was the only house to be spared, because it had been built on a giant rock.
